Then Elijah ordered them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal!  Do not let even one of them escape.’ So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon  and slaughtered them there.


But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit.  Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.


‘Whoever sacrifices to any gods, except the Lord alone, is to be set apart for destruction.


So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor,  and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.


that wicked men have sprung up among you, led the inhabitants of their city astray, and said, “Let’s go and worship other gods,” which you have not known,


you must strike down the inhabitants of that city with the sword. Completely destroy everyone in it as well as its livestock with the sword.


‘If your brother, the son of your mother,  or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let’s go and worship other gods” #– #which neither you nor your ancestors have known,


Instead, you must kill him. Your hand is to be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.


Wasn’t the iniquity of Peor,  which brought a plague on the Lord’s community, enough for us? We have not cleansed ourselves from it even to this day,
