‘Go and enquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah about the words in this book that has been found. For great is the Lord’s wrath that is kindled against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words of this book in order to do everything written about us.’


The Lord sent Chaldean, Aramean,  Moabite,  and Ammonite raiders against Jehoiakim. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord he had spoken through his servants the prophets.


Because of the Lord’s anger,  it came to the point in Jerusalem and Judah that he finally banished them from his presence.  Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.


Indeed, this happened to Judah at the Lord’s command to remove them from his presence.  It was because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all he had done,


and also because of all the innocent blood he had shed. He had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood,  and the Lord was not willing to forgive.


After all this  that Josiah had prepared for the temple, King Neco of Egypt  marched up to fight at Carchemish  by the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to confront him.


But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers,  despising his words,  and scoffing at his prophets, until the Lord’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.


Let our leaders represent the entire assembly. Then let all those in our towns who have married foreign women come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each town, in order to avert the fierce anger of our God  concerning  this matter.’


The Lord’s anger will not turn away until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart. In time to come you will understand it clearly.
