From there Elisha went up to Bethel.  As he was walking up the path, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him,  chanting, ‘Go up, baldy! Go up, baldy! ’


So Hanun took David’s emissaries, shaved them, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.


Nevertheless, he sent them prophets  to bring them back to the Lord; they admonished them, but the people would not listen.


The couriers travelled from city to city in the land of Ephraim and Manasseh as far as Zebulun, but the inhabitants  laughed at them and mocked them.


But since our ancestors angered the God of the heavens, he handed them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.


But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.


You were patient with them for many years, and your Spirit warned them through your prophets, but they would not listen. Therefore, you handed them over to the surrounding peoples.


One who becomes stiff-necked, after many reprimands will be shattered instantly – beyond recovery.


Therefore calamity will strike him suddenly; he will be shattered instantly, beyond recovery.


So now, do not scoff, or your shackles will become stronger. Indeed, I have heard from the Lord God of Armies a decree of destruction for the whole land.


What more could I have done for my vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?


Who are you mocking? Who are you opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue at? Isn’t it you, you rebellious children, you offspring of liars,


I will destine you for the sword, and all of you will kneel down to be slaughtered, because I called and you did not answer, I spoke and you did not hear; you did what was evil in my sight and chose what I did not delight in.’


These evil people, who refuse to listen to me, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts,  and who have followed other gods to serve and bow in worship #– #they will be like this underwear, of no use at all.


You deceived  me, Lord, and I was deceived. You seized me and prevailed. I am a laughing-stock all the time; everyone ridicules me.


For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim, ‘Violence and destruction! ’ So the word of the  Lord has become my constant disgrace and derision.


For this is what the Lord says: Your injury is incurable; your wound most severe.


King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, ‘Why are you prophesying as you do? You say, “This is what the Lord says: Look, I am about to hand this city over to Babylon’s king, and he will capture it.


They have turned their backs to me and not their faces.  Though I taught them time and time again,  , they do not listen and receive discipline.


So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the guard’s courtyard, lowering Jeremiah with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.


‘For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Just as my anger and fury were poured out on Jerusalem’s residents,  so will my fury pour out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an example for cursing, scorn,  execration, and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.”


We have not listened to your servants the prophets,  who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the people of the land.


if you reject my statutes and despise my ordinances, and do not observe all my commands #– #and break my covenant,


This is why I am sending you prophets,   wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues   and pursue from town to town.


Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted   the prophets who were before you.


The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,  were listening to all these things and scoffing  at him.


For he will be handed over to the Gentiles,   and he will be mocked,   insulted, spat   on;


Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked  him, dressed him in bright clothing,  and sent him back to Pilate.


The soldiers also mocked him. They came offering him sour wine


‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note #– #your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.


Look, you scoffers, marvel and vanish away, because I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will never believe, even if someone were to explain it to you.’  ,


When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him, but others said, ‘We’d like to hear from you again about this.’


But some sneered and said, ‘They’re drunk on new wine.’


Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?  They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers  you have now become.


Consequently, anyone who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.


Others experienced mocking and scourging, as well as bonds and imprisonment.


but they did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted  themselves with other gods, bowing down to them. They quickly turned from the way  of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands. They did not do as their ancestors did.
