He added, ‘If only someone would appoint me judge in the land. Then anyone who had a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would make sure he received justice.’


But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit.  Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.


‘You must not deny justice to a poor person among you in his lawsuit.


You must not take a bribe,  for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and corrupts the words  of the righteous.


And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool?  Yet he will take over all my work that I laboured at skilfully under the sun. This too is futile.


Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love graft and chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of the fatherless, and the widow’s case never comes before them.


The one who lives righteously and speaks rightly, who refuses profit from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots and shuts his eyes against evil schemes   –


Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe, her priests teach for payment, and her prophets practise divination for silver. Yet they lean on the  Lord, saying, ‘Isn’t the Lord   among us? No disaster will overtake us.’


Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.


not an excessive drinker, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy.


For the love of money is a root  of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith  and pierced themselves with many griefs.


Now you can see that the king is leading you. As for me, I’m old and grey, and my sons are here with you. I have led you from my youth until now.


‘ “Then I will raise up a faithful priest  for myself. He will do whatever is in my heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him,  and he will walk before my anointed one for all time.
