All the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, imitating all the detestable practices of the nations, and they defiled the Lord’s temple that he had consecrated in Jerusalem.


You must not take a bribe,  for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and corrupts the words  of the righteous.


A wicked person secretly takes a bribe to subvert the course of justice.


To be a thief’s partner is to hate oneself; he hears the curse but will not testify.


Learn to do what is good. Pursue justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow’s cause.


‘Come, let’s settle this,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool.


Your silver has become dross to be discarded, your beer  is diluted with water.


Therefore hear the word of the  Lord,  you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.


The Lord brings this charge against the elders and leaders of his people: ‘You have devastated the vineyard. The plunder from the poor is in your houses.


Woe to the rebellious children! This is the  Lord’s declaration. They carry out a plan,  but not mine; they make an alliance, but against my will, piling sin on top of sin.


The one who lives righteously and speaks rightly, who refuses profit from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots and shuts his eyes against evil schemes   –


who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deprive the innocent of justice.


I spread out my hands all day long to a rebellious people who walk in the path that is not good, following their own thoughts.


But you have eyes and a heart for nothing except your own dishonest profit, shedding innocent blood and committing extortion and oppression.


because of all the evil the Israelites and Judeans have done to anger me #– #they, their kings,  their officials, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.


They have her surrounded like those who guard a field, because she has rebelled against me. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the  Lord, the justice of their God. However, these also had broken the yoke and torn off the chains.


Therefore, a lion from the forest will strike them down. A wolf from arid plains will ravage them. A leopard  stalks their cities. Anyone who leaves them will be torn to pieces because their rebellious acts are many, their unfaithful deeds numerous.


‘Son of man, you are living among a rebellious house.  They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear,  for they are a rebellious house.


‘Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey, shedding blood, and destroying lives in order to make profit dishonestly.


When their drinking is over, they turn to promiscuity. Israel’s leaders  fervently love disgrace.


The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary markers; I will pour out my fury  on them like water.


All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my house because of their evil, wicked actions. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.


For I know that your crimes are many and your sins innumerable. They oppress the righteous,  take a bribe, and deprive the poor of justice  at the city gates.


Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe, her priests teach for payment, and her prophets practise divination for silver. Yet they lean on the  Lord, saying, ‘Isn’t the Lord   among us? No disaster will overtake us.’


Listen to this, leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert everything that is right,


For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; the tongues in their mouths are deceitful.


Both hands are good  at accomplishing evil: the official and the judge demand a bribe; when the powerful man communicates his evil desire, they plot it together.


Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the resident foreigner or the poor,  and do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.”


‘I will come to you in judgement, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident foreigner.  They do not fear me,’  says the Lord of Armies.


The elders of Moab and Midian departed with fees for divination  in hand.  They came to Balaam and reported Balak’s words to him.


He said to them, ‘It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer,   but you are making it a den of thieves! ’   ,


He was teaching them: ‘Is it not written,   My house   will be called a house of prayer   for all nations?   But you have made it a den of thieves! ’   ,


and he said, ‘It is written, my house will be a house of prayer,   but you have made it a den of thieves! ’   ,


Then beginning with Moses  and all the Prophets,  he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.


Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.


Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows  in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.


However, his sons did not walk in his ways #– #they turned towards dishonest profit, took bribes, and perverted justice.
