Now my life is poured out before me, and days of suffering  have seized me.


The heart knows its own bitterness, and no outsider shares in its joy.


A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.


A ruler can be persuaded through patience, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.


Arise, cry out in the night from the first watch of the night. Pour out your heart like water before the Lord’s presence. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children who are fainting from hunger at the head of every street.


Don’t think of me as a wicked woman;  I’ve been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment.’


When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence.  They fasted that day,  and there they confessed, ‘We have sinned against the Lord.’  And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.
