Psalm 55

¹ God, hear my prayer.\par Please don’t ignore my prayer for mercy.\par

² God, please listen to me and answer me.\par Let me speak to you\par and tell you what upsets me.\par

³ My enemy said bad things to me.\par That wicked man yelled at me.\par My enemies were angry and attacked me.\par They brought troubles crashing down on top of me.\par

⁴ My heart is pounding inside me.\par I am scared to death.\par

⁵ I am scared and shaking.\par I am terrified.\par

⁶ Oh, I wish I had wings like a dove.\par I would fly away\par and find a place to rest.\par

⁷ I would go far, far away into the desert.\par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [327]})\i0 \par

^8-10 I would run away.\par I would escape.\par I would run away from this\par storm of trouble.\par

¹¹ There is too much crime in the streets.\par People are lying and cheating everywhere.\par

¹² If it were an enemy insulting me,\par I could bear it.\par If it were my enemies attacking me,\par I could hide.\par

¹³ But it is you, my companion,\par my colleague, my friend.\par \{You are giving me troubles.\}\par

¹⁴ We used to share our secrets with one another,\par as we walked through the crowds together in God’s temple. {\cf2\super [328]} \par

¹⁵ I wish death would take\par my enemies by surprise!\par I wish the earth would open up\par and swallow them alive! {\cf2\super [329]} \par Why? Because they plan\par such terrible things together.\par

¹⁶ I will call to God for help.\par And the Lord will answer me.\par

¹⁷ I speak to God evening, morning, and noon.\par I tell him what upsets me,\par and he listens to me!\par

¹⁸ I have fought in many battles.\par But God has always rescued me\par and brought me back safely.\par

¹⁹ God listens to me.\par The Eternal King will help me.\par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [330]})\i0 \par

²⁰ My enemies will not change their lives. {\cf2\super [331]} \par They don’t fear and respect God.\par

²¹ My enemies attack their own friends.\par They don’t do the things they agree to do.\par

²² My enemies are really smooth talkers;\par they talk about peace,\par but they are really planning wars.\par Their words are as slick as oil,\par but those words cut like a knife.\par

²³ Give your worries to the Lord,\par and he will care for you.\par The Lord will never let good people\par be defeated.\par
