"Sayto them, 'As I live,'saysthe LORD,'justas you have spokenin My hearing,soI will surely doto you;
"Let his own eyesseehis decay,And let him drinkof the wrathof the Almighty.
Therefore He sworeto them That He would castthem downin the wilderness,
"ThereforeI sworein My anger,Trulythey shall not enterinto My rest."
"For I the LORDwill speak,and whateverwordI speakwill be performed.It will nolongerbe delayed,for in your days,O rebellioushouse,I will speakthe wordand performit," declaresthe LordGOD.'"
Now the peoplebecamelike those who complainof adversityin the hearingof the LORD;and when the LORDheard[it], His angerwas kindled,and the fireof the LORDburnedamong them and consumed[some] of the outskirtsof the camp.
Allthe sonsof IsraelgrumbledagainstMosesand Aaron;and the wholecongregationsaidto them, "Wouldthat we had diedin the landof Egypt!Orwouldthat we had diedin thiswilderness!
but indeed,as I live,allthe earthwill be filledwith the gloryof the LORD.
shall by nomeansseethe landwhichI sworeto their fathers,norshall anyof those who spurnedMe seeit.
When Mosesspokethesewordsto allthe sonsof Israel,the peoplemournedgreatly.
Noneof the menwho cameup from Egypt,from twentyyearsoldand upward,shall seethe landwhichI sworeto Abraham,to Isaacand to Jacob;for they did not followMe fully,
"Then the LORDheardthe soundof your words,and He was angryand tookan oath,saying,
Not oneof thesemen,thisevilgeneration,shall seethe goodlandwhichI sworeto giveyour fathers,
"Now the timethat it tookfor us to comefrom Kadesh-barneauntilwe crossedoverthe brookZeredwas thirty-eightyears,untilallthe generationof the menof warperishedfrom withinthe camp,as the LORDhad swornto them.
"Moreoverthe handof the LORDwas against them, to destroythem from withinthe campuntilthey all perished.
Indeed,I liftup My handto heaven,And say,as I liveforever,
And with whomwas He angryfor fortyyears?Was it not with thosewhosinned,whosebodiesfellin the wilderness?
