When Mosessentthem to spyout the landof Canaan,he saidto them, "Goup thereinto the Negev;then goup into the hillcountry.
Abramjourneyedon, continuingtoward the Negev.
So Abramwentup from Egyptto the Negev,he and his wifeand allthat belonged to him, and Lotwith him.
"Arise,walkabout the landthrough its lengthand breadth;for I will giveit to you."
He wenton his journeysfrom the Negevas faras Bethel,to the placewherehis tenthad beenat the beginning,betweenBetheland Ai,
Now the valleyof Siddimwas full of tarpits;and the kingsof Sodomand Gomorrahfled,and they fellinto them. But those who survivedfledto the hillcountry.
"Seewhatthe landis like, and whether the peoplewho livein it are strong[or] weak,whether they are fewormany.
"Amalekis livingin the landof the Negevand the Hittitesand the Jebusitesand the Amoritesare livingin the hillcountry,and the Canaanitesare livingby the seaand by the sideof the Jordan."
In the morning,however, they roseup earlyand wentup to the ridgeof the hillcountry,saying,"Herewe are; we have indeedsinned,but we will goup to the placewhichthe LORDhas promised."
"The Amoriteswho livedin that hillcountrycameout againstyou and chasedyou as beesdo,and crushedyou from Seirto Hormah.
Thus Joshuastruckallthe land,the hillcountryand the Negevand the lowlandand the slopesand alltheir kings.He leftnosurvivor,but he utterlydestroyedallwhobreathed,justas the LORD,the Godof Israel,had commanded.
Then it proceededsouthwardto the ascentof Akrabbimand continuedto Zin,then wentup by the southof Kadesh-barneaand continuedto Hezron,and wentup to Addarand turnedaboutto Karka.
Then Joshuathe sonof Nunsenttwomenas spiessecretlyfrom Shittim,saying,"Go,viewthe land,especiallyJericho."So they wentand cameinto the houseof a harlotwhose namewas Rahab,and lodgedthere.
She saidto him, "Giveme a blessing,sinceyou have givenme the landof the Negev,giveme also springsof water."So Calebgaveher the upperspringsand the lowersprings.
Now the LORDwas with Judah,and they tookpossessionof the hillcountry;but they could not driveout the inhabitantsof the valleybecausethey had ironchariots.
Afterwardthe sonsof Judahwentdownto fightagainst the Canaaniteslivingin the hillcountryand in the Negevand in the lowland.
