So I wentout at nightby the ValleyGatein the directionof the Dragon'sWelland [on] to the RefuseGate,inspectingthe wallsof Jerusalemwhichwere brokendownand its gateswhich were consumedby fire.
Moreover, Uzziahbuilttowersin Jerusalemat the CornerGateand at the ValleyGateand at the cornerbuttressand fortifiedthem.
They saidto me, "The remnanttherein the provincewhosurvivedthe captivityare in greatdistressand reproach,and the wallof Jerusalemis brokendownand its gatesare burnedwith fire."
Then I had the leadersof Judahcomeup on topof the wall,and I appointedtwogreatchoirs,the first proceedingto the righton topof the walltoward the RefuseGate.
And I arosein the night,I and a fewmenwith me. I did not tellanyonewhatmy Godwas puttinginto my mindto dofor Jerusalemand therewas noanimalwith me exceptthe animalon whichI was riding.
So I wentup at nightby the ravineand inspectedthe wall.Then I enteredthe ValleyGateagain and returned.
Then I saidto them, "You seethe badsituationwe are in, that Jerusalemis desolateand its gatesburnedby fire.Come,let us rebuildthe wallof Jerusalemsothat we will nolongerbe a reproach."
I saidto the king,"Let the kingliveforever.Whyshould my facenot be sadwhenthe city,the placeof my fathers'tombs,lies desolateand its gateshave been consumedby fire?"
"Goup through her vinerowsand destroy,But do not executea completedestruction;Stripawayher branches,For they are not the LORD'S.
