But they said,"Your servantsare twelvebrothers[in all], the sonsof onemanin the landof Canaan;and behold,the youngestis with our fathertoday,and oneis nolongeralive."
He returnedto his brothersand said,"The boyis not [there]; as for me, wheream I to go?"
"We are allsonsof oneman;we are honestmen,your servantsare not spies."
Yet he saidto them, "No,but you have cometo lookat the undefendedpartsof our land!"
Josephsaidto them, "It is as I saidto you, you are spies;
We are twelvebrothers,sonsof our father;oneis nolongeralive, and the youngestis with our fathertodayin the landof Canaan.'
Their fatherJacobsaidto them, "You have bereavedme of my children:Josephis nomore,and Simeonis nomore,and you would takeBenjamin;allthese things are againstme."
But Jacob said,"My sonshall not godownwith you; for his brotheris dead,and he aloneis left.If harmshould befallhim on the journeyyou are taking,then you will bringmy grayhairdownto Sheolin sorrow."
As he liftedhis eyesand sawhis brotherBenjamin,his mother'sson,he said,"Is thisyour youngestbrother,of whomyou spoketo me?" And he said,"May Godbe graciousto you, my son."
But they said,"The manquestionedparticularlyabout us and our relatives,saying,Is your fatherstillalive?Haveyou [another] brother?'So we answeredhis questions.Could we possiblyknowthat he would say,'Bringyour brotherdown'?"
"We saidto my lord,'We havean oldfatherand a littlechildof [his] oldage.Now his brotheris dead,so he aloneis leftof his mother,and his fatherloveshim.'
and the onewentout from me, and I said,"Surelyhe is tornin pieces,"and I have not seenhim since.
They toldhim, saying,"Josephis stillalive,and indeedhe is rulerover allthe landof Egypt."But he was stunned,for he did not believethem.
Thussaysthe LORD,"A voiceis heardin Ramah,Lamentation[and] bitterweeping.Rachelis weepingfor her children;She refusesto be comfortedfor her children,Becausethey are nomore."
Our fatherssinned,[and] are nomore;It is we who have bornetheir iniquities.
Thenwhen Herodsawthat he had been trickedby the magi,he became veryenraged,and sentand slewallthe male childrenwho were in Bethlehemand allits vicinity,from two years oldand under,accordingto the timewhichhe had determinedfrom the magi.
"A VOICEWAS HEARDIN RAMAH,WEEPINGAND GREATMOURNING,RACHELWEEPINGFOR HER CHILDREN;AND SHE REFUSEDTO BE COMFORTED,BECAUSETHEY WERE NOMORE."
