But Jacobsaid,"Firstsellme your birthright."
and Esausaidto Jacob,"Pleaselet me havea swallowof that redstuffthere, for I am famished."Thereforehis namewas calledEdom.
Esausaid,"Behold,I amaboutto die;so of what[use] then is the birthrightto me?"
Then he said,"Is he not rightly namedJacob,for he has supplantedme thesetwotimes?He tookaway my birthright,and behold,nowhe has takenaway my blessing."And he said,"Have you not reserveda blessingfor me?"
He said,"Your nameshall nolongerbe Jacob,but Israel;for you have strivenwith Godand with menand have prevailed."
Now the sonsof Reubenthe firstbornof Israel(for he was the firstborn,but because he defiledhis father'sbed,his birthrightwas givento the sonsof Josephthe sonof Israel;so that he is not enrolledin the genealogyaccording to the birthright.
ThoughJudahprevailedover his brothers,and from him [came] the leader,yet the birthrightbelonged to Joseph),
then it shall be in the dayhe willswhathe hasto his sons,he cannotmakethe sonof the lovedthe firstbornbeforethe sonof the unloved,who is the firstborn.
"But he shall acknowledgethe firstborn,the sonof the unloved,by givinghim a doubleportionof allthat he has,for he is the beginningof his strength;to him belongs the rightof the firstborn.
