Now it was afterthisthat Absalomthe sonof Davidhad a beautifulsisterwhose namewas Tamar,and Amnonthe sonof Davidlovedher.
So Joabaroseand wentto Geshurand broughtAbsalomto Jerusalem.
However the kingsaid,"Let him turnto his own house,and let him not seemy face."So Absalomturnedto his own houseand did not seethe king'sface.
AbsalomansweredJoab,"Behold,I sentfor you, saying,'Comehere,that I may sendyou to the king,to say,"Whyhave I comefrom Geshur?It would be betterfor me stillto be there."'Nowtherefore, let me seethe king'sface,and ifthereis iniquityin me, let him putme to death."
Now it cameabout at the endof fortyyearsthat Absalomsaidto the king,"Pleaselet me goand paymy vowwhichI have vowedto the LORD,in Hebron.
"For your servantvoweda vowwhile I was livingat Geshurin Aram,saying,Ifthe LORDshall indeedbringme backto Jerusalem,then I will servethe LORD.'"
The kingwas deeplymovedand wentup to the chamberoverthe gateand wept.And thushe saidas he walked,"O my sonAbsalom,my son,my sonAbsalom!WouldI had diedinsteadof you, O Absalom,my son,my son!"
So Davidwentup there,and his twowivesalso,Ahinoamthe Jezreelitessand Abigailthe widowof Nabalthe Carmelite.
His fatherhad nevercrossedhim at anytimeby asking,"Whyhave you doneso?"And he was alsoa veryhandsomeman,and he was bornafterAbsalom.
So he said,"You knowthat the kingdomwas mine and that allIsraelexpectedme to be king;however, the kingdomhas turnedaboutand becomemy brother's,for it was his from the LORD.
Now thesewere the sonsof Davidwhowere bornto him in Hebron:the firstborn[was] Amnon,by Ahinoamthe Jezreelitess;the second[was] Daniel,by Abigailthe Carmelitess;
the third[was] Absalomthe sonof Maacah,the daughterof Talmaikingof Geshur;the fourth[was] Adonijahthe sonof Haggith;
Jairthe sonof Manassehtookallthe regionof Argobas faras the borderof the Geshuritesand the Maacathites,and calledit, [that is], Bashan,afterhis own name,Havvoth-jair,[as it is] to thisday.)
But the sonsof Israeldid not dispossessthe Geshuritesor the Maacathites;for Geshurand MaacathliveamongIsraeluntilthisday.
(now the man'snamewas Nabal,and his wife'snamewas Abigail.And the womanwas intelligentand beautifulin appearance,but the manwas harshand evilin [his] dealings,and he was a Calebite),
Then Abigailquicklyarose,and rodeon a donkey,with her fivemaidenswho attendedher; and she followedthe messengersof Davidand becamehis wife.
Now Davidand his menwentup and raidedthe Geshuritesand the Girzitesand the Amalekites;for they were the inhabitantsof the landfrom ancienttimes,as you cometo Shureven as faras the landof Egypt.
