the herdsmenof Gerarquarreledwith the herdsmenof Isaac,saying,"The wateris ours!" So he namedthe wellEsek,becausethey contendedwith him.
Shitraithe Sharonitehad chargeof the cattlewhich were grazingin Sharon;and Shaphatthe sonof Adlaihad chargeof the cattlein the valleys.
Jazizthe Hagritehad chargeof the flocks.Allthesewere overseersof the propertywhichbelonged to KingDavid.
He builttowersin the wildernessand hewedmanycisterns,for he hadmuchlivestock,both in the lowlandand in the plain.[He also had] plowmenand vinedressersin the hillcountryand the fertilefields,for he lovedthe soil.
"They cometo you as peoplecome,and sitbeforeyou [as] My peopleand hearyour words,but they do not dothem, for they dothe lustfuldesires[expressed] by their mouth,[and] their heartgoesaftertheir gain.
Nolayman,however, is to eatthe holy[gift]; a sojournerwith the priestor a hiredmanshall not eatof the holy[gift].
But ifa priest'sdaughterbecomesa widowor divorced,and hasnochildand returnsto her father'shouseas in her youth,she shall eatof her father'sfood;but nolaymanshall eatof it.

THISPEOPLEHONORSME WITH THEIR LIPS,BUT THEIR HEARTIS FARAWAYFROM ME.
Now behold,Saulwas comingfrom the fieldbehindthe oxen,and he said,"Whatis [the matter] with the peoplethat they weep?"So they relatedto him the wordsof the menof Jabesh.
Now when Saulhad takenthe kingdomoverIsrael,he foughtagainst allhis enemieson everyside,against Moab,the sonsof Ammon,Edom,the kingsof Zobah,and the Philistines;and whereverhe turned,he inflictedpunishment.
Davidsaidto Ahimelech,"Now is therenot a spearora swordon hand?For I broughtneithermy swordnormy weaponswith me, becausethe king'smatterwas urgent."
"He inquiredof the LORDfor him, gavehim provisions,and gavehim the swordof Goliaththe Philistine."
Then Davidsaidto Abiathar,"I knewon that day,whenDoegthe Edomitewas there,that he would surelytellSaul.I have broughtabout[the death] of everypersonin your father'shousehold.
Then Doegthe Edomite,whowas standingby the servantsof Saul,said,"I sawthe sonof Jessecomingto Nob,to Ahimelechthe sonof Ahitub.
