Now when Saulhad takenthe kingdomoverIsrael,he foughtagainst allhis enemieson everyside,against Moab,the sonsof Ammon,Edom,the kingsof Zobah,and the Philistines;and whereverhe turned,he inflictedpunishment.
The firstbornborea son,and calledhis nameMoab;he is the fatherof the Moabitesto this day.
As for the younger,she alsoborea son,and calledhis nameBen-ammi;he is the fatherof the sonsof Ammonto this day.
Now theseare [the records of] the generationsof Esau(that is, Edom).
Theseare the sonsof Esau(that is, Edom),and theseare their chiefs.
So Esaulivedin the hillcountryof Seir;Esauis Edom.
"From the bloodof the slain,from the fatof the mighty,The bowof Jonathandid not turnback,And the swordof Sauldid not returnempty.
Now when the sonsof Ammonsawthat they had becomeodiousto David,the sonsof Ammonsentand hiredthe Arameansof Beth-rehoband the Arameansof Zobah,20000footsoldiers,and the kingof Maacahwith 1,000men,and the menof Tobwith 12,000men.
So DavidreignedoverallIsrael;and Davidadministeredjusticeand righteousnessfor allhis people.
Then DaviddefeatedHadadezer,the sonof Rehobkingof Zobah,as he wentto restorehis ruleat the River.
Godalso raisedup [another] adversaryto him, Rezonthe sonof Eliada,whohad fledfrom his lordHadadezerkingof Zobah.
The LORDdid not saythat He would blotout the nameof Israelfrom underheaven,but He savedthem by the handof Jeroboamthe sonof Joash.
"Now,hereis the kingwalkingbeforeyou, but I amoldand gray,and beholdmy sonsare with you. And I have walkedbeforeyou from my youthevento thisday.
Saulwas [thirty] yearsoldwhen he began to reign,and he reigned[forty] twoyearsoverIsrael.
Then Saulwentup from pursuingthe Philistines,and the Philistineswentto their own place.
Now the waragainstthe Philistineswas severeallthe daysof Saul;and when Saulsawanymightymanor anyvaliantman,he attachedhim to his staff.
Now oneof the servantsof Saulwas therethat day,detainedbeforethe LORD;and his namewas Doegthe Edomite,the chiefof Saul'sshepherds.
