“But will God indeed dwell with mortals on earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built!
“Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are!
Look at the heavens and see; observe the clouds, which are higher than you.
The Almighty—we cannot find him; he is great in power and justice, and abundant righteousness he will not violate.
Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
As the cloud fades and vanishes, so those who go down to Sheol do not come up;
For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains; your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of the hand? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is the person’s name? And what is the name of the person’s child? Surely you know!
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Though they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.
