Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred of them, and said to them, “Shall I go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?” They said, “Go up, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.”


An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives heed to a mischievous tongue.


What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth,


On that day the inhabitants of this coastland will say, ‘See, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and to whom we fled for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’ ”


The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: “Who among us can live with the devouring fire? Who among us can live with everlasting flames?”


Your first ancestor sinned, and your mediators rebelled against me.


You said, “I shall be mistress forever,” so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.


How long will the land mourn and the grass of every field wither? For the wickedness of those who live in it, the animals and the birds are swept away, and because people said, “He is blind to our ways.”


And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name; I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.


The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.


Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. Look, O Lord, at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!


Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes but have seen oracles for you that are false and misleading.


It was for the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.


They dogged our steps so that we could not walk in our streets; our end drew near; our days were numbered, for our end had come.


Because, in truth, because they have misled my people, saying, “Peace,” when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a flimsy wall, these prophets smear whitewash on it.


They have envisioned falsehood and lying divination; they say, “Says the Lord,” when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they wait for the fulfillment of their word!


Can your courage endure, or can your hands remain strong in the days when I shall deal with you? I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.


And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.


In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s prostitution is there; Israel is defiled.


What will you do on the day of appointed festival and on the day of the festival of the Lord?


If someone were to go about uttering empty falsehoods, saying, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” such a one would be the preacher for this people!


“Do not preach”—thus they preach— “one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.”


Its rulers give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets give oracles for money; yet they lean upon the Lord and say, “Surely the Lord is with us! No harm shall come upon us.”


Its prophets are reckless, faithless persons; its priests have profaned what is sacred; they have done violence to the law.


He said, ‘I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom there is no faithfulness.


If they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern what their end would be.
