These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one just like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.


The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth.


Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth dwindled, and few people are left.


They have made it a desolation; desolate, it mourns to me. The whole land is made desolate, but no one lays it to heart.


Judah mourns, and her gates languish; they lie in gloom on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.


For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns, and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. Their course has been evil, and their might is not right.


I looked, and there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled.


Because of this the earth shall mourn and the heavens above grow black, for I have spoken; I have purposed; I have not relented, nor will I turn back.


The prophets are nothing but wind, for the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them!


the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule as the prophets direct; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?


Therefore thus says the Lord God: My anger and my wrath shall be poured out on this place, on humans and animals, on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.


Take up weeping and wailing for the mountains and a lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness, because they are laid waste so that no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard; both the birds of the air and the animals have fled and are gone.


Shall I not punish them for these things? says the Lord, and shall I not bring retribution on a nation such as this?


Therefore the land mourns, and all who live in it languish; together with the wild animals and the birds of the air, even the fish of the sea are perishing.


How the animals groan! The herds of cattle wander about because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep are perishing.


And he said: The Lord roars from Zion and utters his voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds wither, and the top of Carmel dries up.


Though the fig tree does not blossom and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls,


Then the angel of the Lord said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?”


We know that the whole creation has been groaning together as it suffers together the pains of labor,
