108 Offering and Tithes

Think about this: Christ loved us so much that he gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering to God.1 He made the ultimate sacrifice for you on the cross, loving you to death and beyond. Even as time marches on, His love stays constant.

It's so important for you to grasp that the biggest sacrifice has already been made. But now, you get to be a pleasing offering to God, too. Let your service, your honor, and your giving be a delight to your Heavenly Father. Know that Jesus has given you everything, and anything you offer pales in comparison to His love.

Giving to God, supporting His work, it's an expression of love. Don't see it as a burden or an obligation, but as a response to God's love and Jesus' sacrifice. It's a way of saying "thank you" for everything Heaven has poured into your life.

1Ephesians 5:2

“But before all these things, they will seize you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake.

It will turn out as a testimony for you.

Therefore resolve in your hearts beforehand not to practice your defense.

For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your opponents will be able to neither refute nor resist.

You will be betrayed by parents and brothers and relatives and friends. And they will put some of you to death.

You will be hated by all men for My name’s sake,

He also saw a poor widow putting in two mites,

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you know that its desolation has drawn near.

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in the city depart, and let not those who are in the country enter it.

For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.

They will fall by the edge of the sword and will be led away captive to all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

“There will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;

men fainting from fear and expectation of what is coming on the inhabited earth. For the powers of heaven will be shaken.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

When these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near.”

He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.

and He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.

When they are sprouting leaves already, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near.

So in like manner, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

“Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things are fulfilled.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

“Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts become burdened by excessiveness and drunkenness and anxieties of life, and that Day comes on you unexpectedly.

For as a snare it will come on all those who dwell on the surface of the whole earth.

Therefore watch always and pray that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”

And it must be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, and you possess it, and dwell in it,

And behold, now I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which You, O  Lord, have given me.” Then you shall set it before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God.

You shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you, and the Levite, as well as the foreigner who is among you.

When you have finished tithing all the tithes of your income the third year, which is the year of tithing, and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow, that they may eat within your towns and be satisfied,

then you shall say before the Lord your God, “I have removed the sacred things out of my house and also have given them to the Levite, and to the foreigner, to the orphan, and to the widow, according to all Your commandments which You have commanded me. I have not transgressed Your commandments or forgotten them.

I have not eaten anything when in mourning, nor have I removed anything while unclean, nor offered anything to the dead. I have listened to the voice of the Lord my God and have done according to all that You have commanded me.

Look down from Your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the land which You have given us, as You swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Today the Lord your God has commanded you to do these statutes and judgments. You must therefore keep and do them with all your heart and with all your soul.

You have affirmed today that the Lord is your God and vowed to walk in His ways, and to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and to listen to His voice.

And the Lord has affirmed today that you are His special people, just as He has promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments.

He will exalt you above all nations which He has made, in praise, and in name, and in honor; and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.

that you shall take from the first of all the produce of the ground which you shall bring from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide.

Hebrews 7:1-2

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him.

for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met Abraham.

If perfection were attained through the Levitical priesthood (for through it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise in the order of Melchizedek, rather than established in the order of Aaron?

For a change in the priesthood necessitates a change in the law.

For the One concerning whom these things are spoken pertains to another tribe, from which no man served at the altar.

For it is evident that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe concerning which Moses said nothing about priests.

This is far more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,

who becomes a priest not by a law pertaining to ancestry, but by the power of an endless life.

For He testifies: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

For there is then an annulling of the previous commandment due to its weakness and uselessness.

For the law made nothing perfect, but now a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

To him Abraham also gave one-tenth of everything. In the first place, his name is translated “king of righteousness,” and then also he is king of Salem, which means “king of peace.”

Matthew 6:2-4

“Therefore, when you do your charitable deeds, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in nor steal,

for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

“The light of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

But if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. Therefore, if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

“No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

“Therefore, I say to you, take no thought about your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?

Who among you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature?

“Why take thought about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They neither spin nor weave.

Yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.

But when you do your charitable deeds, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is here and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Therefore, take no thought, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you.

Therefore, take no thought about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take thought about the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is the trouble thereof.

so that your righteous deeds may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

2 Corinthians 8:1-5

Moreover, brothers, we want you to experience the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia,

And in this matter I give my advice. It is appropriate for you, who began last year not only to give, but also to willingly give.

Now therefore complete the task, so that, as there was a willingness to do so, there may be a performance of it according to your means.

For if there is a willing mind first, the gift is accepted according to what a man possesses and not according to what he does not possess.

I do not mean that other men have relief, and you be burdened,

but for equality, that your abundance now at this time may supply their need, and their abundance may supply your need —that there may be equality.

As it is written, “He who gathered much had no excess. And he who gathered little had no lack.”

But thanks be to God, who placed the same sincere care in the heart of Titus for you.

For indeed he accepted the exhortation. But being more zealous, he went to you of his own accord.

And we have sent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches.

And not only that, but he was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which we administer to the glory of the same Lord, and to declare your willing mind,

how in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty overflowed toward the riches of their generous giving.

to prevent any man from blaming us in administering this abundant gift,

providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of men.

Furthermore, we have sent with them our brother whom we have frequently proved diligent in many things, but now is much more diligent, due to the great confidence which he has in you.

If anyone inquires about Titus, he is my partner and fellow helper concerning you. Or if our brothers are inquired about, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

Therefore show to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.

For I bear record that according to their means, and beyond their means, they freely gave,

begging us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of ministering to the saints.

This they did, not as we expected. First, they gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.

Prayer

Eternal Father, You are exalted, for everything in heaven and earth bows before You. In Jesus' name, I thank You for Your goodness to me, for each and every blessing. One of these was the sacrifice Jesus made for me on the cross. Your body, Lord, was broken, and You carried the weight of my peace upon Yourself, offering Yourself as a fragrant sacrifice to God. Thank You, Jesus, for this undeserved gift of giving Your life to atone for my sins, cleansing me and freeing my soul from torment. Beloved Father, help me to live gratefully, loving You for what You’ve done in me, and sharing that love with those around me, because it is written: "And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." My offering to You each day will be a heart willing to seek Your face and a contrite and humble spirit. I don't have much to offer, but I present my life before You that Your will may be done in it. Guide my steps, Holy Spirit, that all my ways may be pleasing to God. In Jesus' name, Amen.
