And Aḇraham answered and said, “Look, please, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to יהוה,


“I do not deserve the least of all the loving-commitment and all the truth which You have shown Your servant, for I passed over this Yardĕn with my staff, and now I have become two groups.


And the heart of Dawiḏ struck him after he had numbered the people. And Dawiḏ said to יהוה, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, I pray, O יהוה, take away the crookedness of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”


But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree, and prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, יהוה, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”


“O יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl, You are righteous, for we are left as a remnant, as it is this day. See, we are before You, in our guilt, for there is no one to stand before You concerning this!”


and said, “O my Elohim, I am too ashamed and wounded to lift up my face to You, my Elohim, for our crookednesses have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens.


“And in all that has come upon us You are righteous, for You have done truth, but we have done wrong.


O that one might plead for a man with Eloah, as a man with his neighbour!


Look at me and be appalled, then put your hand on your mouth.


rulers held back their words, and laid a hand on their mouth;


I would declare to Him the number of my steps – I would approach Him like a prince.


Teach us what we should say to Him; we do not set in order because of darkness.


And Iyoḇ answered יהוה and said,


Therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”


“I was dumb, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it.


If you have been foolish in lifting up yourself, Or if you have plotted evil, Put your hand on your mouth.


We all, like sheep, went astray, each one of us has turned to his own way. And יהוה has laid on Him the crookedness of us all.


And I said, “Woe to me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips – for my eyes have seen the Sovereign, יהוה of hosts.”


And all of us have become as one unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as soiled rags. And all of us fade like a leaf, and our crookednesses, like the wind, have taken us away.


Let him put his mouth in the dust, There might yet be expectancy.


so that you remember. And you shall be ashamed, and never open your mouth any more because of your shame, when I pardon you for all you have done,” declares the Master יהוה.’ ”


“We have sinned and did crookedness, and did wrong and rebelled, to turn aside from Your commands and from Your right-rulings.


“O יהוה, to You is the righteousness, and to us the shame of face, as it is this day – to the men of Yehuḏah, to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim and all Yisra’ĕl, those near and those far off in all the lands to which You have driven them, because of their trespass which they have trespassed against You.


“And if leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy shall cover all the skin of the infected one, from his head to his foot, wherever the priest looks,


Let the nations see and be ashamed of all their might, let them put their hand over their mouth, let their ears be deaf.


“But יהוה is in His set-apart Hĕḵal. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”


“Hush, all flesh, before יהוה, for He has roused Himself out of His set-apart dwelling!”


“But the tax collector standing at a distance would not even raise his eyes to the heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘Elohim, show favour unto me, a sinner!’


And when Shim‛on Kĕpha saw it, he fell down at the knees of יהושע, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a man, a sinner, O Master!”


Trustworthy is the word and worthy of all acceptance, that Messiah יהושע came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am foremost.


And they said to him, “Be silent, put your hand over your mouth, and come with us, and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest to the household of one man, or that you be a priest to a tribe and a clan in Yisra’ĕl?”
