For we are bondmen, and in our bondage our God hath not forsaken us, but hath extended mercy upon us before the king of the Persians, to give us life, and to set up the house of our God, and rebuild the desolations thereof, and to give us a fence in Juda and Jerusalem.


And they said to me: They that have remained, and are left of the captivity there in the province, are in great affliction and reproach: And the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and the gates thereof are burnt with fire.


And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, and before the dragon fountain, and to the dung gate: and I viewed the wall of Jerusalem which was broken down, and the gates thereof which were consumed with fire.


But the magistrates knew not whither I went, or what I did: neither had I as yet told any thing to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the rest that did the work.


And the gate of the fountain Sellum the son of Cholhoza built, lord of the street of Maspha: he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks, and the bars, and the walls of the pool of Siloe unto the king's garden, and unto the steps that go down from the city of David.


man's days are as grass, as the flower of the field so shall he flourish.


And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.


All the glory of the king's daughter is within in golden borders,


It stretched forth its branches unto the sea, and its boughs unto the river.


Convert us, O God: and shew us thy face, and we shall be saved.


And I will deliver them up to vexation and affliction, to all the kingdoms of the earth: to be a reproach and a byword and a proverb, and to be a curse in all places to which I have cast them out.


Beth. The Lord hath cast down headlong and hath not spared all that was beautiful in Jacob: he hath destroyed in his wrath the strongholds of the virgin of Juda and brought them down to the ground: he hath made the kingdom unclean, and the princes thereof.


Ain. My eye hath wasted my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.


And I will make thee desolate and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of every one that passeth by.


The day shall come, that thy walls may be built up: in that day shall the law be far removed.


And Naas the Ammonite answered them: On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may pluck out all your right eyes, and make you a reproach in all Israel.
