To do mercy and judgment, pleaseth the Lord more than victims.


Will he not, when he hath made plain the surface thereof, sow gith, and scatter cummin, and put wheat in order, and barley and millet and vetches in their bounds?


Thus saith the Lord: Execute judgement and justice: and deliver him that is oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor: and afflict not the stranger, the fatherless and the widow, nor oppress them unjustly: and shed not innocent blood in this place.


For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice: and the knowledge of God more than holocausts.


All tithes of the land, whether of corn, or of the fruits of trees, are the Lord's, and are sanctified to him.


I will shew thee, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requireth of thee: Verily, to do judgment, and to love mercy, and to walk solicitous with thy God.


And if you knew what this meaneth: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: you would never have condemned the innocent.


But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men, for you yourselves do not enter in; and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.


Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.


But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb; and pass over judgment, and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone.


I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.


And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices; and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams.
