For I was ashamed to ask the king for aid and for horsemen, to defend us from the enemy in the way. Because we had said to the king: The hand of our God is upon all them that seek him in goodness; and his power and strength, and wrath upon all them that forsake him.


And thou shalt say to them: The man of the house of Israel, and of the strangers who sojourn among you, that offereth a holocaust or a victim,


For if you will not follow him he will leave the people in the wilderness: and you shall be the cause of the destruction of all.


In the place, which the Lord your God shall choose, that his name may be therein. Thither shall you bring all the things that I command you: holocausts, and victims, and tithes, and the first-fruits of your hands, and whatsoever is the choicest in the gifts which you shall vow to the Lord.


And when the children of Israel had heard of it, and certain messengers had brought them an account that the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses had built an altar in the land of Chanaan, upon the banks of the Jordan, over against the children of Israel,


Who came to the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, into the land of Galaad, and said to them:


It repenteth me that I have made Saul king: for he hath forsaken me, and hath not executed my commandments. And Samuel was grieved, and he cried unto the Lord all night.
