Particularly Jeremias: whose lamentations for Josias all the singing men and singing women repeat unto this day. And it became like a law in Israel: Behold, it is found written in the Lamentations.


And at the return of the year, king Nabuchodonosor sent, and brought him to Babylon, carrying away at the same time the most precious vessels of the house of the Lord. And he made Sedecias his uncle king over Juda and Jerusalem.


For he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans: and he slew their young men with the sword in the house of his sanctuary. He had no compassion on young man, or maiden, old man, or even him that stooped for age; but he delivered them all into his hands.


And the king of Egypt came to Jerusalem, and deposed him, and condemned the land in a hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.


My bowels, my bowels, are in pain, the senses of my heart are troubled within me. I will not hold my peace, for my soul hath heard the sound of the trumpet, the cry of battle.


Destruction upon destruction is called for, and all the earth is laid waste: my tents are destroyed on a sudden and my pavilions in a moment.


For my foolish people have not known me: they are foolish and senseless children. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.


Saying: No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war nor hear the sound of the trumpet nor suffer hunger; and there we will dwell.


Strengthen yourselves, ye sons of Benjamin, in the midst of Jerusalem, and sound the trumpet in Thecua, and set up the standard over Bethacarem: for evil is seen out of the north, and a great destruction.
