In his days Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon came up, and Joakim became his servant three years. Then again he rebelled against him.


But in the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, to fulfil the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the mouth of Jeremias, the Lord stirred up the heart of Cyrus king of the Persians: Who commanded it to be proclaimed through all his kingdom, and by writing also, saying:


The Lord will repay for me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: O despise not the work of thy hands.


And that Babylon, glorious among kingdoms, the famous pride of the Chaldeans, shall be even as the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha.


And I will make it a possession for the ericius, and pools of waters: and I will sweep it and wear it out with a besom, saith the Lord of hosts.


For the waters of Nemrim shall be desolate, for the grass is withered away: the spring is faded, all the greenness is perished.


IN the year that Tharthan entered into Azotus, when Sargon the king of the Assyrians had sent him, and he had fought against Azotus, and had taken it:


WOE to thee that spoilest! Shalt not thou thyself also be spoiled? And thou that despisest, shalt not thyself also be despised? When thou shalt have made an end of spoiling, thou shalt be spoiled: when being wearied thou shalt cease to despise, thou shalt be despised.


BEL is broken: Nebo is destroyed. Their idols are put upon beasts and cattle, your burdens of heavy weight even unto weariness.


Therefore, thus saith the Lord the God of Israel to the pastors that feed my people: You have scattered my flock and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you for the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.


For they have served them, whereas they were many nations and great kings: and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the works of their hands.


They shall be carried to Babylon, and there they shall be until the day of their visitation, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to be brought and to be restored in this place.


And all nations shall serve him and his son and his son's son, till the time come for his land and himself: and many nations and great kings shall serve him.


For thus saith the Lord: When the seventy years shall begin to be accomplished in Babylon, I will visit you: and I will perform my good word in your favour, to bring you again to this place.


I will make thee everlasting desolations, and thy cities shall not be inhabited: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord God.


For this cause therefore he spreadeth his net, and will not spare continually to slay the nations.
