And Joachin king of Juda went out to the king of Babylon, he and his mother, and his servants, and his nobles, and his eunuchs. And the king of Babylon received him in the eighth year of his reign.


And he carried away Joachin into Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his eunuchs. And the judges of the land he carried into captivity from Jerusalem into Babylon.


And after that he was in distress he prayed to the Lord his God: and did penance exceedingly before the God of his fathers.


His prayer also, and his being heard, and all his sins, and contempt, and places wherein he built high places, and set up groves, and statues before he did penance, are written in the words of Hozai.


And he did not humble himself before the Lord, as Manasses his father had humbled himself, but committed far greater sins.


Therefore Moses and Aaron went in to Pharao, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long refusest thou to submit to me? Let my people go, to sacrifice to me.


And a girdle of fine twisted linen: violet, purple, and scarlet twice dyed, of embroidery work, as the Lord had commanded Moses.


For thou shalt not always have power: but a crown shall be given to generation and generation.


And bodkins, and ornaments of the legs, and tablets, and sweet balls, and earrings:


And her gates shall lament and mourn: and she shall sit desolate on the ground.


COME down, sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon: sit on the ground. There is no throne for the daughter of the Chaldeans, for thou shalt no more be called delicate and tender.


As I live, saith the Lord, if Jechonias the son of Joakim, the king of Juda, were a ring on my right hand, I would pluck him thence.


And I will send thee, and thy mother that bore thee, into a strange country, in which you were not born: and there you shall die.


After that Jechonias the king and the queen and the eunuchs and the princes of Juda and of Jerusalem and the craftsman and the engravers were departed out of Jerusalem:


And when they had heard all the words, they looked upon one another with astonishment and they said to Baruch: We must tell the king all these words.


Vau. And from the daughter of Sion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like rams that find no pastures: and they are gone away without strength before the face of the pursuer.


Teth. Her filthiness is on her feet and she hath not remembered her end: she is wonderfully cast down, not having a comforter. Behold, O Lord, my affliction, because the enemy is lifted up.


Jod. The ancients of the daughter of Sion sit upon the ground, they have held their peace: they have sprinkled their heads with dust, they are girded with haircloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.


The crown is fallen from our head. Woe to us, because we have sinned!


And I put a jewel upon thy forehead and earrings in thy ears and a beautiful crown upon thy head.


Thus saith the Lord God: Remove the diadem, take off the crown. Is it not this that hath exalted the low one, and brought down him that was high?


Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead: let the tire of thy head be upon thee, and thy shoes on thy feet, and cover not thy face, nor eat the meat of mourners.


You shall have crowns on your heads, and shoes on your feet: you shall not lament nor weep, but you shall pine away for your iniquities, and every one shall sigh with his brother.


They shall have linen mitres on their heads, and linen breeches on their loins, and they shall not be girded with any thing that causeth sweat.


And the word came to the king of Ninive; and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.


Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.


Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.


Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:
