And God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and he said to him: Lo, thou shalt die for the woman thou hast taken; for she hath a husband.


Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet. And he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: but if thou wilt not restore her, know that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.


And Abimelech called also for Abraham, and said to him: What hast thou done to us? What have we offended thee in, that thou hast brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? Thou hast done to us what thou oughtest not to do.


They answered: Should they abuse our sister as a strumpet?


Juda said: Let her take it to herself; surely she cannot charge us with a lie. I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her.


And David's anger being exceedingly kindled against that man, he said to Nathan: As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this is a child of death.


And Nathan said to David: Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I anointed thee king over Israel; and I delivered thee from the hand of Saul,


I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:


Of old time thou hast broken my yoke, thou hast burst my bands, and thou saidst: I will not serve. For on every high hill and under every green, tree thou didst prostitute thyself.


It is commonly said: If a man put away his wife, and she go from him and marry another man, shall he return to her any more? Shall not that woman be polluted and defiled? But thou hast prostituted thyself to many lovers. Nevertheless return to me, saith the Lord, and I will receive thee.


And the Lord said to me in the days of king Josias: Hast thou seen what rebellious Israel hast done? She hath gone out of herself upon every high mountain and under every green tree and hath played the harlot there.


That because the rebellious Israel had played the harlot, I had put her away and had given her a bill of divorce: yet her treacherous sister Juda was not afraid, but went and played the harlot also herself.


But trusting in thy beauty, thou playedst the harlot because of thy renown and thou hast prostituted thyself to every passenger, to be his.


At every head of the way thou hast set up a sign of thy prostitution, and hast made thy beauty to be abominable, and hast prostituted thyself to every one that passed by, and hast multiplied thy fornications.


And thou hast committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, men of large bodies, and hast multiplied thy fornications to provoke me.


Thou hast also committed fornication with the Assyrians, because thou wast not yet satisfied: and after thou hadst played the harlot with them, even so thou wast not contented.


And they shall burn thy houses with fire and shall execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and thou shalt cease from fornication and shalt give no hire any more.


For she multiplied her fornications, remembering the days of her youth, in which she played the harlot in the land of Egypt.


And they went in to her, as to a harlot: so went they in unto Oolla and Ooliba, wicked women.


And Oolla committed fornication against me and doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians that came to her,


For their mother hath committed fornication, she that conceived them is covered with shame: for she said: I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread, and my water, my wool, and my flax, my oil, and my drink.


And I said to her: Thou shalt wait for me many days: thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt be no man's, and I also will wait for thee.


If thou play the harlot, O Israel, at least let not Juda offend: and go ye not into Galgal, and come not up into Bethaven, and do not swear: The Lord liveth.


If any man commit adultery with the wife of another, and defile his neighbour's wife: let them: be put to death, both the adulterer and the adulteress.


If the daughter of a priest be taken in whoredom, and dishonour the name of her father, she shall be burnt with fire.


Hast thou faith? Have it to thyself before God. Blessed is he that condemneth not himself in that which he alloweth.


The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children for the fathers: but every one shall die for his own sin.


And she left him and returned to her father's house in Bethlehem, and abode with him four months.
