And Esac said to him: Hast thou only one blessing, father? I beseech thee, bless me also. And when he wept with a loud cry,


And having watered the flock, he kissed her: and lifting up his voice, wept.


For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I be a witness of the calamity that will oppress my father.


And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruse. Behold, I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.


But the woman whose child was alive said to the king (for her bowels were moved upon her child): I beseech thee, my lord, give her the child alive, and do not kill it. But the other said: Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.


Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her womb? And if she should forget, yet will not I forget thee.


Gird thee with sackcloth, O daughter of my people, and sprinkle thee with ashes: make thee mourning as for an only son, a bitter lamentation, because the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.


And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring up sackcloth upon every back of yours, and baldness upon every head: and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the latter end thereof as a bitter day.


And I will pour out upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of prayers: and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced: and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for an only son, and they shall grieve over him, as the manner is to grieve for the death of the firstborn.


And rising up he came to his father. And when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and running to him fell upon his neck, and kissed him.


And when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, they lifted up their voice, and wept.


May he grant you to find rest in the houses of the husbands which you shall take. And she kissed them. And they lifted up their voice and began to weep,


Be the Lord judge; and judge between me and thee; and see, and judge my cause; and deliver me out of thy hand.


David and the people that were with him lifted up their voices, and wept till they had no more tears.
