And the children of the captivity did so. And Esdras the priest, and the men heads of the families in the houses of their fathers, and all by their names, went and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.


He that sacrificeth to gods, shall be put to death, save only to the Lord.


Thou shalt not adore their gods, nor serve them. Thou shalt not do their works: but shalt destroy them, and break their statues.


Any thing that is devoted to the Lord, whether it be man, or beast, or field, shall not be sold: neither may it be redeemed. Whatsoever is once consecrated shall be holy of holies to the Lord.


Inquire carefully and diligently the truth of the thing by looking well into it: and if thou find that which is said to be certain, and that this abomination hath been really committed,


And that prophet or forger of dreams shall be slain: because he spoke to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of bondage: to make thee go out of the way, which the Lord thy God commanded thee. And thou shalt take away the evil out of the midst of thee.


And this is told thee, and hearing it thou hast inquired diligently, and found it to be true, and that the abomination is committed in Israel:


And we took all his cities at that time, killing the inhabitants of them, men and women and children. We left nothing of them:


Thou shalt consume all the people, which the Lord thy God will deliver to thee. Thy eye shall not spare them: neither shalt thou serve their gods, lest they be thy ruin.


And the Lord thy God shall have delivered them to thee: thou shalt utterly destroy them. Thou shalt make no league with them, nor shew mercy to them.


But they burned the city, and all things that were therein; except the gold and silver, and vessels of brass and iron, which they consecrated into the treasury of the Lord.


And the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast: these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her with fire.


(Nor were the children of Benjamin ignorant that the children of Israel were come up to Maspha.) And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was killed, being asked, how so great a wickedness had been committed,


But the children of Israel returning put all the remains of the city to the sword, both men and beasts: and all the cities and villages of Benjamin were consumed with devouring flames.
