He stood in the midst of the field, and defended it, and defeated the Philistines. And the Lord gave a great victory.


Naaman, general of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable: for by him the Lord gave deliverance to Syria. And he was a valiant man and rich, but a leper.


He was with David in Phesdomim, when the Philistines were gathered to that place to battle: and the field of that country was full of barley, and the people fled from before the Philistines.


May his posterity be cut off; in one generation may his name be blotted out.


Let all thy works, O lord, praise thee: and let thy saints bless thee.


And I made haircloth my garment: and I became a byword to them.


Therefore will I distribute to him very many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong: because he hath delivered his soul unto death and was reputed with the wicked. And he hath borne the sins of many and hath prayed for the transgressors.

And all their kings, and their lands he took and wasted at one onset: for the Lord the God of Israel fought for him.


And the Lord delivered them into the hands of Israel. And they defeated them, and chased them as far as the great Sidon, and the waters of Maserophot, and the field of Masphe, which is on the east side thereof. He slew them all, so as to leave no remains of them.


Now when he was come to the place of the Jawbone, and the Philistines shouting went to meet him, the spirit of the Lord came strongly upon him: and as the flax is wont to be consumed at the approach of fire, so the bands with which he was bound were broken and loosed.


And being very thirsty, he cried to the Lord, and said: Thou hast given this very great deliverance and victory into the hand of thy servant; and behold I die for thirst, and shall fall into the hands of the uncircumcised.


And Saul said: No man shall be killed this day, because the Lord this day hath wrought salvation in Israel.


And the Lord saved Israel that day. And the fight went on as far as Bethaven.


And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour: Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be the Lord will do for us, because it is easy for the Lord to save either by many, or by few.


And the children of Israel returning, after they had pursued the Philistines, fell upon their camp.


And he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine; and the Lord wrought great salvation for all Israel. Thou sawest it and didst rejoice. Why therefore wilt thou sin against innocent blood by killing David, who is without fault?
