18 Wherefore Joas king of Juda took all the sanctified things, which Josaphat, and Joram, and Ochozias, his fathers the kings of Juda had dedicated to holy uses, and which he himself had offered: and all the silver that could be found in the treasures of the temple of the Lord, and in the king's palace: and sent it to Hazael king of Syria. And when he had gathered together the silver and gold that could be found in the house of the Lord, and in the king's treasures, he sent it for a present to the king of the Assyrians.


And Hazael said to him: Why doth my lord weep? And he said: Because I know the evil that thou wilt do to the children of Israel. Their strong cities thou wilt burn with fire, and their young men thou wilt kill with the sword and thou wilt dash their children, and rip up their pregnant women.


Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king's treasures, and sent to Benadad king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying:


And after the death of Joiada the princes of Juda went in, and worshipped the king: and he was soothed by their services and hearkened to them.


For you have taken away my silver and my gold: and my desirable and most beautiful things you have carried into your temples.
