And when the sun was set, there arose a dark mist; and there appeared a smoking furnace, and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.


Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.


And Elias answering said to the captain of fifty: If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee, and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him, and the fifty that were with him.


And as they went on, walking and talking together, behold, a fiery chariot, and fiery horses parted them both asunder: and Elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven.


But yet let not my wonder terrify thee, and let not my eloquence be burdensome to thee.


There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes: and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:


And the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he saw that the bush was on fire and was not burnt.


And when he passed before him, he said: O the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, patient and of much compassion, and true,


And he answered, and spoke to me, saying: This is the word of the Lord to Zorobabel, saying: Not with an army, nor by might, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.


And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.


Keep therefore your souls carefully. You saw not any similitude in the day that the Lord God spoke to you in Horeb from the midst of the fire:


That a people should hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of fire, as thou hast heard, and lived:


For our God is a consuming fire.
