This was their ordering in their service, to come into the house of YHWH according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as YHWH, the God of Israel, had commanded him.


But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children; therefore Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.


For the Levites left their pasture lands and their possessions, and came to Judah and Jerusalem; for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest’s office to YHWH.


Also for the sons of Aaron the priests, who were in the fields of the pasture lands of their cities, in every city, there were men who were mentioned by name to give portions to all the males among the priests and to all who were listed by genealogy among the Levites.


Hezekiah appointed the divisions of the priests and the Levites after their divisions, every man according to his service, both the priests and the Levites, for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of YHWH’s camp.


He appointed, according to the ordinance of David his father, the divisions of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their offices, to praise and to minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required, the doorkeepers also by their divisions at every gate, for David the man of God had so commanded.


They set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God which is at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.


“Bring Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, near to you from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office: Aaron, with Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.


You are to put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister to me in the priest’s office.


“This is the thing that you are to do to them to make them holy, to minister to me in the priest’s office: take one young bull and two rams without defect,


I will sanctify the Tent of Meeting and the altar. I will also sanctify Aaron and his sons to minister to me in the priest’s office.


You are to clothe them with belts, Aaron and his sons, and bind headbands on them. They are to have the priesthood by a perpetual statute. You are to consecrate Aaron and his sons.


You are to anoint Aaron and his sons, and sanctify them, that they may minister to me in the priest’s office.


You and your sons, y’all are to carry out y’all’s priesthood for everything of the altar, and for that within the veil. Y’all must serve. I give the service of the priesthood to y’all as a gift. The stranger who comes near must be put to death.”


During the reign of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the priestly division of Abijah. His wife Elizabeth was one of the daughters of Aaron.


But they had no child, because Elizabeth could not conceive, and they both were very old.
