They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.


Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then y’all do this: Y’all take from the choice fruits of the land in y’all’s bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.


Have you rejected-rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why do you strike us with no hope of healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came, and for a time of healing, but there is only terror!


For YHWH says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are Gilead to me, the head of Lebanon. Yet surely I will make you a wilderness, cities which are not inhabited.


Go up into Gilead, and take balm, virgin daughter of Egypt. You use many medicines in vain. There is no healing for you.


Babylon has suddenly fallen and been destroyed! Y’all wail over her! Y’all get balm for her pain. Perhaps she may be healed.


As a well produces its waters, so she produces her wickedness. Violence and destruction is heard in her. Sickness and wounds are continually before me.


Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a spring of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!


“I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling place of jackals. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”


What should I testify to you? What should I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem? What should I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? For your breach is as big as the sea. Who can heal you?
