As if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him.


They burned incense at all the high places, just like the nations whom YHWH removed before them did. They did wicked things to provoke YHWH to anger,


Those who make them will be like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.


So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.


Who is this who comes up from the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all spices of the merchant?


The fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, will be like a ripe fig before the summer. Whoever sees it, picks and eats it immediately.


Your gods, Judah, are as numerous as your cities, and y’all citizens of Jerusalem have set up as many shameful incense altars to Baal as streets in the city.’


One basket had very good figs, like the figs that had ripened early, and the other basket had very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.


But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our ancestors from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.


Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us. For we have sinned against YHWH our God, we and our ancestors, from our youth even to this day. We have not obeyed YHWH our God’s voice.”


YHWH says, “The people who survive the sword found favor in the wilderness. Israel, when it went to find rest.”


The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will y’all do at the end of it?


“‘“But they rebelled against me and wouldn’t listen to me. They didn’t all throw away the detestable things before their eyes. And they didn’t forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the middle of the land of Egypt.


“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.


I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.


I will give her vineyards from there, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she will respond there as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.


I will not punish y’all’s daughters when they become prostitutes, or y’all’s brides when they commit adultery, because the men consort with prostitutes, and they sacrifice with the shrine prostitutes, so the people without understanding will come to ruin.


Their liquor is gone. They are promiscuous-promiscuous! And the rulers, y’all love-love shameful ways.


Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of leavened bread, and y’all proclaim free will offerings and brag about them, for this is what y’all children of Israel love to do,” says Lord YHWH.


Misery is mine! Indeed, I am like one who gathers the summer fruits, as gleanings of the vineyard. There is no cluster of grapes to eat. My soul desires to eat the early fig.


This is to be a tassel for y’all too look at and remember all YHWH’s commandments, and for y’all do them and not prostitute yourselves by following y’all’s own heart and y’all’s own eyes.


The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to YHWH belongs to you. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat of it.


So at that time, what benefit did y’all gain from the things that you* are now ashamed of? Because the outcome of those things is death.


Hᴇ found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. Hᴇ surrounded him. Hᴇ cared for him. Hᴇ kept him as the apple of his eye.


They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they didn’t know, to new gods that came up recently, which y’all’s ancestors did not dread.


Y’all’s eyes have seen what YHWH did because of Baal Peor, for YHWH your God destroyed everyone who followed Baal Peor from among you.


Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”
