Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with y’all any more, unless y’all destroy the devoted things from among y’all.


Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.


He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have y’all come out prepared for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and aren’t y’all servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves*, and have him come down to me.


The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.


The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.


When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has YHWH defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of YHWH’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”
