They would not listen but were stubborn, as their ancestors had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God.


He did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the Lord.


Nevertheless, some good is found in you, for you destroyed the sacred poles out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.”


Yet the high places were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their ancestors.


who set their hearts to seek God, the Lord the God of their ancestors, even though not in accordance with the sanctuary's rules of cleanness.”


Do not be like your ancestors and your kindred, who were faithless to the Lord God of their ancestors, so that he made them a desolation, as you see.


“If you direct your heart rightly, you will stretch out your hands toward him.


Our ancestors, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wonderful works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled against the Most High at the Red Sea.


God gives the desolate a home to live in; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious live in a parched land.


Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not true to his covenant.


How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!


Yet they tested the Most High God, and rebelled against him. They did not observe his decrees,


The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are.


Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, or I would consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”


For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, and I will decide what to do to you.’ ”


He said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”


For they are a rebellious people, faithless children, children who will not hear the instruction of the Lord;


I said to their children in the wilderness, Do not follow the statutes of your parents, nor observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols.


But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; not one of them cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.


When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast devotion;


“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do.


For I know well how rebellious and stubborn you are. If you already have been so rebellious toward the Lord while I am still alive among you, how much more after my death!


while those of you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today.


Furthermore the Lord said to me, “I have seen that this people is indeed a stubborn people.


You have been rebellious against the Lord as long as he has known you.


They came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them,


Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you.
