But as he was speaking the king said to him, “Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be put to death?” So the prophet stopped, but said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice.”


“Therefore, hear me, you who have sense, far be it from God that he should do wickedness, and from the Almighty that he should do wrong.


“If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say.


“Hear my words, you wise men, and give ear to me, you who know;


Those who have sense will say to me, and the wise who hear me will say,


Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but those who hate to be rebuked are stupid.


A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for one who understands.


An intelligent mind acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.


Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; reprove the intelligent, and they will gain knowledge.


When a scoffer is punished, the simple become wiser; when the wise are instructed, they increase in knowledge.


Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.


A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you; the wise, when rebuked, will love you.


Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning.


Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.


I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.


You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!”
