The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.


For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, yet I have not forgotten your statutes.


“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.


Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”


And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”


And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.


Here is our bread; it was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey, on the day we set out to come to you, but now, see, it is dry and moldy;


these wineskins were new when we filled them, and see, they are burst; and these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.”


But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,


with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes; and all their provisions were dry and moldy.
