Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my earthly sojourn are one hundred thirty; few and hard have been the years of my life. They do not compare with the years of the life of my ancestors during their long sojourn.”


For we are aliens and transients before you, as were all our ancestors; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.


Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the older men who had attended his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”


“A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble,


comes up like a flower and withers, flees like a shadow and does not last.


I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’


My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and come to their end without hope.


Will they not teach you and tell you and utter words out of their understanding?


My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass.


But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; your name endures to all generations.


They are like a breath; their days are like a passing shadow.


You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. Selah


They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk around in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.


For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night.
