Numbers 17:10 - New International Version (Anglicised)

10 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.’

I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts – men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.


Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: “Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.” ’


As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, that it might be preserved.


Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the Lord has spoken: ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


‘Since the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, Israel, and there you have remained. Will not war again overtake the evildoers in Gibeah?


Then Moses and Aaron fell face down in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there.


‘Separate yourselves from this assembly so that I can put an end to them at once.’


the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites.’


as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no-one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the Lord, or he would become like Korah and his followers.


Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.


Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you.


Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.


So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him.


‘See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites.


And do not grumble, as some of them did – and were killed by the destroying angel.


Let no-one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.


You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.


Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.


which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.


Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord.


But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, ‘Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.’
