They will say, ‘As one ploughs and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave.’


Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit.


Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.


As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me.


But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.


Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.


The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.


But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.


The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you – all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones – all those who were kings over the nations.


For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.


Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined for death, for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead.


‘Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit.


‘All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.


and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions.


At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, ‘The earth is going to swallow us too!’


The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.’


The line of Korah, however, did not die out.


For a fire will be kindled by my wrath, one that burns down to the realm of the dead below. It will devour the earth and its harvests and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.


Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.
