At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.


And God said, ‘I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.’


Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’


You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do.


‘When Pharaoh says to you, “Perform a miracle,” then say to Aaron, “Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,” and it will become a snake.’


This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.


‘Now, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who prophesy out of their own imagination. Prophesy against them


I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.


‘The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.


“Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord – and I must say only what the Lord says”?


I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’


Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.


By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.


‘I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish – the very works that I am doing – testify that the Father has sent me.


For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.


If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
