They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,


How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!


The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat round pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.’


and they said, ‘May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.’


and if you say, “No, we will go and live in Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the trumpet or be hungry for bread,”


‘Remnant of Judah, the Lord has told you, “Do not go to Egypt.” Be sure of this: I warn you today

Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us!


They quarrelled with Moses and said, ‘If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord!


they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!’


‘But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.


And the little ones that you said would be taken captive, your children who do not yet know good from bad – they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it.
