Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low; their idols are borne by beasts of burden. The images that are carried about are burdensome, a burden for the weary.


‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the latter, without neglecting the former.


So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practise what they preach.


Jesus replied, ‘And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.


Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear?


It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:


Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh.
