For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.


Now I, King Artaxerxes, decree that all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates are to provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, the teacher of the Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you –


this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.


The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.


The lips of the wise spread knowledge, but the hearts of fools are not upright.


The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.


The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, both new and old, that I have stored up for you, my beloved.


A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.


‘Have you understood all these things?’ Jesus asked. ‘Yes,’ they replied.


When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.


Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.


Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,


Because of this, God in his wisdom said, “I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.”


‘A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.


sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.


In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,


Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ,


You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,


Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.


He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.


He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
