Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.’


Therefore, people revere him, for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?’


My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.


Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.


‘I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,


‘Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults.


Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?’ declares the Lord. ‘These are the ones I look on with favour: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.


Should you not fear me?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it.


‘So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.


‘Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.’


But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, “Raca,” is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, “You fool!” will be in danger of the fire of hell.


and come out – those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.


Then Paul answered, ‘Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.’


It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.


Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection.


There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you – who are you to judge your neighbour?


But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. ‘Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.’


Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.
