‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’


Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love – Isaac – and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you.’


Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.


And we answered, “We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.”


Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.


I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, ‘You are my son; today I have become your father.


‘Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.


‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’).


‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.


While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’


But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, ‘I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’


And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’


And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’


He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.


‘But the tenants said to one another, “This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.”


Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: ‘This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!’


and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’


A voice came from the cloud, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.’


The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.


No-one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.


I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.’


Then Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’


The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.


that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent him.


And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’


This is how God showed his love among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
