For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighbouring peoples.


The rest seized his servants, ill-treated them and killed them.


‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.


Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.


Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.


‘He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, “They will respect my son.”


But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.’


Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
