He said to his relatives, ‘Gather some stones.’ So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.


Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.


When you have crossed the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster.


Hear, Israel: you are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.


When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.


So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,


to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, “What do these stones mean?”
